Deskbound

Good grief, it’s hot. It doesn’t matter how many fans I position around the place, all they can muster is temporary heat redistribution or hot draught creation. Still, this weather’s reminded me of last year’s America holiday, hence the photo above.
Download number 15 from here. What you will need;

Magnus - Summer’s here
Well it is, isn’t it?

CSS - Let’s make love & listen to death from above
Brasilian electro, which becomes better as time goes on. Greatness.

Switches - Message from yuz
No prizes for spotting the “influences”. The Supergrass one, in particular, reminds me of hot days in Reading, 1995.

Head of femur - The true wheel
A very good Brian Eno cover, if a little too faithful. They should’ve been the next Arcade Fire, but it didn’t seem to happen.

Semifinalists - Show the way
The next Arcade Fire? Or the next Head of Femur? A good album, I think, even if not many tracks stand on their own. I think this one does.

Grandaddy - Nature anthem
It’s summer, so I keep looking out of the window and thinking of songs like this. Farewell Grandaddy. You came, you made a few of us feel quite nice for short periods of time, then you split up. Good luck with everything.

Long Winters - Shapes
They’ve brought out a new album, but I prefer the last one. There are some great songs on the album, even if the best ones sound like other bands (Buffalo Tom and REM, chiefly). This one’s REM, I think. Happy, though.

Beulah - Hovering
By no means their strongest track, but this one reminds me of sitting in the open-air departure lounge at a Hawaiian airport, waiting to fly back to the mainland.

Hawaii

Recently, I’ve come to realise that (the now defunct) Beulah might be one of my favourite bands of all time. I wish I’d decided this before they split up.

Goldenboy - Babydoll
Odd. This is on an excellent album, but it stands as the only particularly silly moment.

Zita Swoon - Bananaqueen
Joy in MP3 form.

Mint Royale (featuring Lauren Laverne) - Don’t falter
We’ll be seeing Lauren on Friday, when she’s presenting some largely useless TV programme from a venue in central Bristol. And regardless of the fairly poor TV and radio programmes she’s involved in these days, she’ll always have Kenickie. Well, she’ll always have Don’t Falter, anyway.
